The name of the city literally means “plum village,” but its original Thai name is much longer and is included in the Guinness World Records as the world’s longest name for a city. In fact, it is not only the name of the city that is very long, Thanom Sukhumvit Street, is one of the longest streets in the world.

Bangkok has a glorious historical heritage and began as a trading city in the kingdom of Ayutthaya from 1350 to 1767. It became the capital of Thailand in 1768 and has the status of a special administrative district in Thailand.
This city has no less than 50 districts, each of which has its own mayor, and even a government, which governs these districts and is responsible for the city budget. Today, Bangkok is the most important commercial and economic center in South East Asia, where there are not only official Thai institutions (such as the stock exchange, universities, the museum and the National Theater) but also large multinational companies who chose to found themselves in the city. As for the contours of the urban landscape, every tourist will immediately notice that the city is rising, and in fact, no less than a thousand skyscrapers are registered there!
Despite the city’s modern and urban character, there are plenty of green lungs, including a huge forest park covering more than 50 square kilometers. A prominent feature of which is the Chao Phraya River, which flows for 372 kilometers.
Bangkok attracts a huge number of tourists from all over the world, who are vacationing in quality hotels, buying in the city’s huge malls and spending time in the many attractions that the city offers. This is a very significant tourist destination. Euromonitor reported several years ago that no fewer than 10 million tourists visited Bangkok in 2006, the second largest number of tourists a year after London.

the city that never stops
Bangkok is a tropical city in every sense of the word. Perhaps the first thing you will discover when you land here is that it is very hot and humid (Israelis actually have it easier because it is not really different from Tel Aviv in the summer). And yet, despite the noise, this is a city that everyone loves to explore its attractions and sites. It is considered to be a city that is more welcoming to tourists. You will find here a magical combination of innovation and modernization in the face of ancient tradition and culture, old temples in streets with new houses, busy businessmen and monks in robes.
For many backpackers, Bangkok is a destination for an intermediate stop, where they will catch a good meal, cheap lodging and perhaps a drink at the bar. But most of its visitors are not backpackers, but hikers who arrive for a few days. The city has restaurants, cheap hotels along with luxury hotels and many attractions that make it an excellent destination for those looking for a short trip to an interesting place.
